The Nigeria Police have clarified that they cannot arrest individuals for crossdressing, as it is not considered a crime under Nigerian law.
The Force Police Public Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made this statement during an appearance on the Channels TV programme, Politics Today.
While addressing the issue, Adejobi mentioned that although there were allegations that some crossdressers were involved in illegal activities such as homosexuality, there has not been enough evidence to prosecute them.
He highlighted the challenges in proving cases like rape, emphasizing the need for credible evidence to secure a conviction in court.
Adejobi stated, “Crossdressing is not a crime in Nigeria, I’ve not read it anywhere that it is an offence per se.
But some of them that are into crossdressing, there are allegations that they are into something else, unnatural offences.”
He further explained that while individuals are free to dress as they please, if there is sufficient evidence of involvement in illegal activities, they would be prosecuted accordingly under Nigerian law.
The clarification from the Nigeria Police comes amidst debates and discussions surrounding the rights of individuals to express themselves through their choice of clothing and the legal boundaries of such expressions in the country.
