Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has approved the recruitment of 2,000 teachers as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s education sector.
The announcement was made during an Executive Council meeting on Thursday at the Government House in Gusau.
According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, the initiative fulfills campaign promises and underscores the administration’s commitment to revitalizing education, which ranks second on its priority list.

Phased Recruitment Plan
Governor Lawal revealed that the recruitment will be carried out in phases to ensure the selection of qualified candidates who will address the critical needs of schools.
“The government will employ 2,000 qualified teachers to help improve and revitalize the education sector.
The recruitment will be carried out in phases to ensure that only the best candidates are employed,” he stated.
The first phase, set for the first quarter of 2025, will focus on hiring 500 teachers specializing in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, ICT, and Entrepreneurship studies.
Part of a Broader Initiative
The recruitment is part of the Accelerating Girls’ Education in Nigeria (AGILE) programme, which aims to tackle longstanding deficiencies in Zamfara’s education system.
Since declaring a state of emergency in education on November 14, 2023, the government has initiated several key projects, including:
- Construction and renovation of over 400 schools across the state’s 14 Local Government Areas.
- Provision of over 12,000 two-seater desks for pupils and students.
- Equipping renovated schools with more than 700 tables and 1,000 chairs for teachers.
Commitment to Education
Governor Lawal emphasized his administration’s determination to reverse the decline in the education sector and ensure a brighter future for children in Zamfara.
“This recruitment and other ongoing projects are a testament to our commitment to reversing the rot in the education sector and ensuring a brighter future for our children,” he said.
Challenges and Priorities
Despite facing security and economic challenges, Zamfara State continues to prioritize human capital development.
The recruitment drive and ongoing education projects underscore the administration’s resolve to transform the sector and provide opportunities for the state’s youth.
The initiative has been lauded as a significant step towards addressing the critical gaps in the education system while fostering long-term development in Zamfara.
